Composting Polystyrene with Mealworms:

Based on Stanford University researcher's discovery in 2015, we have created our own polystyrene (broadly known as Styrofoam™ ) composting system. We shared our composting system with 7th grade biology students at Spring Street International School, and they successfully produced 2 pounds of composted polystyrene soil during the 2021-2022 school year.

Photos Above: Spring Street International School students learn about mealworms that compost styrofoam before collecting styrofoam from Jackson's Beach on San Juan Island. A mealworm begins to eat into the center of a piece of styrofoam using digestive enzymes that can re-constitute the fossil fuel hydrocarbon polymer Styrene.
