On Sacred Ground Receives Grant from Pacific Power Foundation

 January 14, 2025

On Sacred Ground received a grant from the Pacific Power Foundation to conduct workshops for homeowners to design wildfire defensible spaces using permaculture techniques.  Two host sites will provide hands-on opportunities for workshop participants to see how to design waterscapes, which could include ponds or swales as enhanced barriers to wildfire.  Additionally, homeowners will receive a well-rounded classroom education for understanding permaculture landscaping techniques that help hydrate landscapes and prevent catastrophic wildfire.  Online workshops will be part of this series starting in February 2025 in light of the recent fires in the Los Angeles area and the overall desire on the west coast to mitigate increasing wildfire risk.  In person workshops will take place in Southern Oregon's Josephine County, and are slated for May 2025.

On Sacred Ground and Jenny Shrum to Manage Island Marble Butterfly Captive Rearing for FY 2024

June 1st, 2023

Hot off the Press!

On Sacred Ground, under the leadership of Jenny Shrum, will take over the captive propagation permit from San Juan Island National Historical Park, a first since the Park began the rearing program in partnership with U.S. Fish and Wildlife and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife in 2009.  Jenny Shrum has been involved in or at the helm of the lab since 2014 and is excited for this next step toward island marble recovery.  Jenny and On Sacred Ground managed captive rearing in 2020 and 2021, but under the national park's permit.  On Sacred Ground's Executive Director Sarah Hanson also anticipates strong advancements toward stabilizing island marble's population.  "This means that the national park staff can shift their focus toward creating more quality habitat for the island marbles still within the park, which is something they've been moving toward for several years.  With higher quality habitat within the park and more suitable and protected habitat being established outside the park boundaries, this butterfly has a solid chance of making it."
